Trump Removes Watchdog for COVID-19 Response; National Faith Leader Response

Washington, D.C. — President Trump removed the Inspector General who was independently chosen to oversee implementation of the recently passed $2 trillion COVID-19 response legislation. Over the past several days, Trump has attacked and fired several Inspectors General, including the intelligence community’s inspector general, Michael Atkinson, and the Health and Human Services Inspector General, Christi Grimm.

Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO of Faith in Public Life:

“In this moment of crisis, we need stable, honest leadership. Amid a pandemic, corruption kills. President Trump is instead removing oversight meant to ensure that taxpayer money intended to save lives from COVID-19 is not stolen. Scripture says that deeds done in secret will be brought into light. Congress must use every tool at its disposal to ensure that the administration does not cast the darkness of secrecy over badly needed public health dollars.”
