National Faith Leader Denounces Trump Administration Attack on Transgender People’s Health Care

Washington, D.C. — The Department of Health and Human Services finalized a rule that would roll back an Affordable Care Act rule prohibiting discrimination against patients who are transgender. This policy change put transgender people at greater risk of discrimination, even jeopardizing their access to life-saving care in a time of a pandemic.

Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO, Faith in Public Life:

“Taking away our transgender family’s protection from being denied health care is immoral at any time. It is especially unconscionable amid a deadly pandemic. Adding deep insult to vicious injury, this rule was released on the fourth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting. The Trump administration’s rollback of crucial protections could cost our transgender friends, family and neighbors life-saving care. We simply cannot allow anyone to use religious beliefs or religious freedom as a license to discriminate or harm others.”
