National Faith Leader Denounces Supreme Court Decision Allowing Trump Administration to Stop Census Count
Washington, D.C. — The Supreme Court just ruled to permit the Trump administration to prematurely end the 2020 Census, pending the result of a lawsuit.
Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO, Faith in Public Life:
“The Supreme Court violated the sanctity of democracy today by allowing the Trump administration to halt the 2020 Census two weeks early. But this is not the final word. Congress must act today to remedy this wrong. Everyone counts to God, and everyone must be counted by the government.
A full and accurate count of everyone in this country lays the foundation for a healthy democracy and healthy communities. Stopping the census early is an immoral scheme to deprive communities of color, immigrants and low-income people of their rightful share of federal funding and political representation. Today’s ruling highlights the importance of making the Supreme Court a bulwark of democracy, and points to what we lose when it becomes a partisan instrument. In the middle of Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s rushed nomination, this ruling is an ominous sign of what lies ahead if the Senate defies democracy by confirming her to the court before the next inauguration.”
