National Faith Leader Criticizes President Trump’s Failure to Reunite Immigrant Families to Meet Court Order

Washington, D.C. — At today’s court-ordered deadline to reunite 2,500 children with their parents, the Trump administration expects to fail to reunite 900 children because they cannot locate their parents or their parents have been deported. These children were pulled away from their parents at the US-Mexico border because of the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy that a federal court declared unlawful.

Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO of Faith in Public Life (Washington, D.C.):

“The passing of this deadline, with hundreds of children still locked away from their parents, is an unconscionable display of cruelty, incompetence and lawlessness by President Trump. It was wrong and illegal to rip these children away from their parents in the first place, and the Trump administration’s failure to put these families back together is a symptom of immoral indifference.

“Justice demands that we unite all of these children and parents immediately and put an end to all inhumane and cruel practices in our immigration system.”
