Faith Leaders Flood Census Comments with Condemnation of Unjust Citizenship Question

Washington, D.C. — Following the deadline for public comment submission regarding the inclusion of a controversial, discriminatory citizenship question in the 2020 Census, Faith in Public Life mobilized over 400 comments against the question. Experts are concerned that it would cause large numbers of people to decline to participate in the census, particularly impacting communities of color.

Sara Benitez, Organizing Director of Faith in Public Life, recently spoke at the Progressive National Baptist Convention’s Annual Session on the importance of the 2020 Census.

“The faith community has powerfully spoken up against the unjust, dangerous addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 Census. Everyone counts, and faith leaders are organizing to make sure our government recognizes this.”
