Faith Leader Criticizes President Trump’s Supreme Court Nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, Encourages Senate to Block
Washington, D.C. — President Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court seat vacated by Judge Kennedy. Kavanaugh has continually ruled as a judge to limit the ability of the government to protect vulnerable Americans: from weakening environmental protections to undermining labor protections.
Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO of Faith in Public Life (Washington, D.C.):
“The American people deserve a Supreme Court that protects our rights, our health and our democracy. In recent years, the court’s conservative justices have repeatedly sided with corporations over workers and the public, racists over people of color, and the powerful over the powerless. Nothing we have learned thus far about Brett Kavanaugh suggests he would shift the court’s immoral course. Catholic social teaching is clear about the responsibilities of the government to protect vulnerable people. We have every reason to believe he would further enable the Trump administration’s corruption and immoral policies.”
“As a pastor, I oppose Kavanaugh’s nomination and call on people of faith to do everything in our power to ensure that he is not seated on the nation’s highest court. The rights of millions and the future of our democracy are at stake.”
