Faith & Community Leaders Demand ICE to Immediately Release Immigrant Grandmother

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On Monday, April 1st, faith and community leaders demanded that ICE immediately release Glori, an immigrant grandmother, from detention so that she can be with her family in Charlotte while she continues to pursue her asylum case.

Glori has been detained by ICE for over a year. She is primary caretaker for her granddaughter, Sherlyn. Victims of domestic violence, they fled Mexico seeking asylum. Glori has been detained in California, while Sherlyn is here in Charlotte.

Tara Harris, member of Myers Park Baptist Church:

“Glori is a survivor of targeted violence, abuse and domestic violence. She is exercising her right to seek asylum in this country. Today, we call on the officials at ICE to grant Glori’s parole request. We are seeking her immediate release. As people of faith, we come together today heeding Jesus’s words that challenge us to love our neighbor as ourselves.”

Sr. Rose Marie Tresp, Sisters of Mercy:

“The Sisters of Mercy’s commitment to immigrants comes out of deep belief in the dignity of each human person created by God and in the value and necessity for supporting family life. Reuniting families including grandparents provides the support that those new to life in the United States need to make a living, be supported emotionally, spiritually and physically in unfamiliar situations, and integrate into the life of the community. Immigrants and refugees are blessings to our society, always renewing the deepest values of the United States of freedom and community.”

Rev. Ben Boswell, Senior Minister, Myers Park Baptist Church:

“We stand here today in love and fidelity to the truth that God has called us, in sacred scripture: to love the foreigner, the immigrant and the stranger among us. This community gathered here on behalf of Glori today – this is what love looks like in public. We demand that Glori be immediately released by ICE on humanitarian parole.”
