National Faith Leader on the Termination of Title 42

CEO Rev. Jennifer Butler, “I urge President Biden to continue to listen to the voices of immigrants and asylum seekers, immediately stop all expulsions of asylum seekers and take action to repair the harm this policy has caused.”

Washington, DC – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), announced its plans to terminate Title 42, the Trump-era policy that allows for the rapid expulsion of migrants at the border and blocks them from seeking asylum.

Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO of Faith in Public Life

“The end of Title 42 is a long-awaited win for immigrants and immigrant rights groups and a win for human dignity. Refugees and asylum seekers are made in the image of God. Like many faiths, my Christian tradition calls us to “welcome the stranger.” The Title 42 policy of rejecting those seeking refuge forced vulnerable people into dangerous situations, with people stuck in Mexico facing thousands of kidnappings and violent attacks over the past two years. This policy has also disproportionately harmed Black refugees and asylum seekers from Haiti. When images surfaced last fall of border patrol officials on horseback whipping Haitian asylum seekers, the officials justified the violence by claiming the enforcement of Title 42. The Biden administration is doing the right thing by ending this wicked, Trump-era policy.

My Christian tradition speaks of true repentance as ending the harm done and working to repair the damage. I urge President Biden to continue to listen to the voices of immigrants and asylum seekers, immediately stop all expulsions of asylum seekers and take action to repair the harm this policy has caused.”
