Over 40 Columbus Faith Leaders Implore Governor Kasich to Stop the Execution of William T. Montgomery
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Over 130 faith leaders from across the state, and 41 in Columbus, are calling for Governor Kasich to stop the execution of William T. Montgomery. In a statewide letter released today, faith leaders argue that the wrong man could be headed for the lethal injection gurney on April 11th if Governor Kasich doesn’t intervene.
“As people of faith and as protectors of life, we urge you to spare Mr. Montgomery. There is no moral argument in favor of taking a man’s life,” the letter states. “To the contrary, we must speak up and stay on the side of life. We are gravely concerned about the imminent execution of a man who proclaims innocence and has unheard evidence. Governor Kasich, we urge you to stop this execution.”
On March 16, the Ohio Parole Board voted to commute Montgomery’s sentence to life without parole. Governor Kasich must affirm that decision. Ahead of the Easter and Passover holidays, faith leaders are imploring Governor Kasich to take action.
