Over 1,500 Faith Leaders Call for the Immediate Resignation of Steve Bannon, Other Members of Trump’s Cabinet of Bigotry

Washington, D.C. – More than 1,500 clergy and community leaders are calling on President Trump and elected officials throughout the nation to condemn white supremacy and the organizations that seek to give it mainstream credibility.

Clergy are also urging President Trump to remove Steve Bannon and other supporters of the alt-right from his White House and stand against the racist policies they propose.

These leaders are signatories of a “moral mandate” to condemn violence and bigotry released today.

“White supremacist beliefs, whether they be expressed by the KKK, neo-Nazis, the alt-right or publications like Breitbart, are antithetical to our scripture and to America’s ideals,” the mandate states. “We recognize that this is an American issue and call on all elected leaders to embrace our democracy and uphold our cherished values of the dignity and worth of every human soul. These values have brought America her finer moments, enabling us to end slavery and Jim Crow and to advance human dignity and civil rights for all.”

Prominent signers include: Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO, Faith in Public Life; Brian McLaren, activist and writer; Rev. Jacqui Lewis, Pastor, Middle Collegiate Church; Dr. Katharine Henderson, President, Auburn Seminary; Valarie Kaur, Director, Revolutionary Love and Sikh Activist; Pastor Michael McBride, Director for Urban Strategies/LIVE FREE Campaign, PICO National Network; Shane Claiborne, speaker, activist and author, founder, Red Letter Christians. *Organization names are for identification purposes only

Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO of Faith in Public Life:

“White supremacy and racism are the greatest threats to the Gospel of Jesus Christ who said we must love our neighbor as we love ourselves. White Christians must place dismantling racism at the center of our ministries or we fail Jesus, our communities and our nation.”
