Ahead of Senate Judiciary Committee vote, leaders urge senators to reject Sessions for U.S. Attorney General
Washington, D.C. — On Monday, January 30th, at 11 a.m., a prominent coalition of interfaith clergy and civil rights leaders will hold a rally on the steps of the Supreme Court to call on senators to reject the nomination of Sen. Jeff Sessions for U.S. Attorney General. The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on Sessions’ confirmation the following day.
Faith leaders stand firmly against President Trump’s recent executive orders to build a border wall, escalate the targeting of undocumented immigrants, and ban refugees and visas from several Muslim-majority countries. They see Sen. Sessions as an extension of Trump’s immoral policies and unprincipled leadership.
“As people of faith, we stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are under threat — immigrants, refugees, and people of color. An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us,” said Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO of Faith in Public Life and lead organizer for the event. “We need an Attorney General who protects voting rights for people of color rather than seeking to undermine them. We are urging Mr. Trump to not allow bigotry and discrimination to be the hallmark policy of his administration.”
