GA Clergy and Community Leaders Urge Lawmakers to Pass Comprehensive Civil Rights Bill with LGBTQ Protections

Atlanta, Ga. — On Thursday, March 21st, faith leaders and Georgia Equality called on lawmakers to protect LGBTQ Georgians by passing a comprehensive civil rights bill.

As one of only three states with no comprehensive law protecting residents and visitors from discrimination of any kind, even racial or religious discrimination, Georgia lags behind almost the entire nation.

For the second consecutive session, state lawmakers have introduced legislation to enact  comprehensive, LGBTQ-inclusive civil rights protections: House Bill 19. Passing HB 19 would bring Georgia’s civil rights laws in line with the rest of the country and make it a leader in protecting LGBTQ Americans.

Rev. William E. Flippin, Jr., Senior Pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church:

“As a pastor, it has been frustrating to come down to the Gold Dome, year after year, trying to explain to politicians that I do not want religion to be used as a tool for discrimination. That is an affront to my faith. Let us create a culture of inclusion, not division. The faith community wants civil rights for all, and we cannot wait any longer.”
