Over 900 Faith and Community Leaders Call on U.S. Senators to Vote “No” on the Better Care Reconciliation Act

Washington, D.C. -- More than 900 clergy and community leaders are calling on U.S. senators to vote “no” on the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA), which would strip 22 million Americans of their health care.

These leaders are signatories of a Moral Declaration to Protect Health Care released today to keep up the pressure on Senators who hold the lifesaving care of millions of Americans in their hands.

“Speaking with one voice, we implore you to oppose the Better Care Reconciliation Act on moral grounds. Its cruel cuts to Medicaid will take coverage and care away from many of our most vulnerable seniors, children and people with disabilities,” the letter states. “As people of faith, we remind you that public service calls for sound moral judgment. This bill presents a test of whether you can withstand partisan pressure and do what is right for your constituents -- especially those who need help the most.”

Prominent signers include: Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO, Faith in Public Life; Susan Thistlethwaite, former President, Chicago Theological Seminary; Nish Weiseth, Blogger/Writer; Rabbi Jonah Pesner, Director, The Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism; Diana Butler Bass, Author and Historian

Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO of Faith in Public Life:

“This death care bill is just as immoral as the version that passed the House of Representatives in May. It still strips away health care from those Scripture tells us to care for first: the poor, elderly and children. It still increases costs for seniors. It still gives the very wealthiest a massive tax cut. Part of loving our neighbors is ensuring they have access to quality, affordable health care. I pray that senators will listen to their consciences and their constituents, and defeat this immoral bill.”
