#RiseForRefuge: Over 1,800 Faith Leaders Sign National Solidarity Pledge in Support of Immigrant and Refugee Communities

Washington, D.C. -- Ahead of the national day of action for refugee communities, #RiseForRefuge, over 1,800 faith leaders from across all 50 states, have signed a solidarity pledge rebuking the Trump administration’s current treatment of those seeking asylum.

The Trump administration is considering cutting the number of refugee admissions next year to nearly zero -- violating our nation’s basic human rights obligation obligations under international law. The crack down on refugees is in line with the administration's racist and immoral immigration agenda which also includes the inhumane detention of children and families.

“We affirm this letter in the spirit of love, solidarity, and resolute commitment to celebrate your God-given dignity. Justice and love have no borders and cannot be stifled when people of faith and goodwill commit to living for each other,” the pledge states. “As we witness inhumanity at the border -- babies dying in U.S. custody and in the desert, children suffering in abhorrent detention facilities, and families sent into danger to await their asylum claims -- our hearts break. As people of faith, we will continue to work to dismantle all systems of oppression that harm our immigrant neighbors.”

Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO Faith in Public Life:

“Right now, many of our immigrant and refugee friends are afraid because of the immoral actions of our government and the violent speech of President Trump. Everyone deserves to be secure in their communities. All families deserve to stay together. With this letter we are pledging solidarity with vulnerable members of our community and are promising to keep fighting for justice for all of God’s children.”
