National Faith Leader Demands Increased Voting Rights Protections as House Subcommittee Meets

Washington, DC -- The House of Representatives Elections Subcommittee will hold a hearing on "Voting Rights and Election Administration in America" Thursday, October 17th, to discuss the need for strengthened voting rights protections. In the aftermath of the Shelby v. Holder Supreme Court decision – which gutted key protections of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) – states and localities across the country enacted restrictive voting laws and closed polling places, disenfranchising millions of American voters. The Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA) is a key piece of legislation that would restore the Voting Rights Act.

Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO, Faith in Public Life:

"Voting is a sacred right and a cornerstone of democracy. We desperately need to protect every American’s right to vote - and right now this right is endangered by gaps in the law. Our spiritual ancestors in the Civil Rights Movement fought for the Voting Rights Act. We must honor their sacrifices today by passing the Voting Rights Advancement Act."
