National Faith Leader Mourns the Loss of Rep. Elijah Cummings

Washington, D.C. -- Rep. Elijah Cummings, Democratic Member of Congress from Baltimore and chair of the powerful House Oversight Committee, died early Thursday at Johns Hopkins Hospital due to complications from long-standing health challenges. He was 68.

Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO, Faith in Public Life:

"Today our nation lost a towering moral leader in Rep. Elijah Cummings. A member of New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore, Congressman Cummings was anchored in his faith and lived a life rooted in doing justice. As our nation is diminished by executive leadership devoid of integrity, decency or honesty, we will  miss the principled warrior in the House who held the most powerful accountable. I pray for his family, constituents, staff and colleagues as they mourn this loss.”
