National Faith Leader Decries Trump Plan to Take Funding from Emergency Response to Jail Immigrants
Washington, D.C. -- The Department of Homeland Security announced that they are taking $155 million from disaster relief funds to pay for increased detention of immigrants at the southern border. This comes as a tropical storm is hours away from making landfall on Puerto Rico.
Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO, Faith in Public Life (Washington, DC):
“The humanitarian crisis on the southern border is a disaster of the Trump administration’s making. They are intentionally traumatizing thousands of children of God. In a cruel twist, the vindictive detention of immigrants and asylum seekers now comes at the expense of communities facing natural disasters. As a tropical storm approaches Puerto Rico, this compound injustice is inexcusable.”
