#FamiliesBelongTogether Stages National Day of Action Calling for JPMorgan Chase & Wells Fargo to Stop Financing For-Profit Prisons Profiting from Immigrant Family Detention

Protesters rally outside JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo headquarters in Columbus, New York and San Francisco and deliver hundreds of thousands of petitions and letters to local bank branches in all 50 states

WHAT: Families hold press conference in front of JPMorgan Chase Headquarters, pledge to close accounts.

WHEN: Wednesday September 26, 4:30pm

WHERE: Chase Headquarters, 1111 Polaris Pkwy, Columbus, Ohio

Families in Columbus will participate in a national day of action against “corporate backers of hate.”  Parents and children will gather at Chase’s Ohio headquarters to tell James Malz, President of the Ohio Market for the bank, to stop financing for-profit prisons that detain immigrant children.  The group will enter the building to deliver thousands of petition signatures and unfurl a massive banner which reads “Chase funds child detention.”

This effort is coordinated with rallies outside of the headquarters of JPMorgan Chase in New York City and Wells Fargo in San Francisco on the same day to urge the banks to stop financing Geo Group and CoreCivic, two large for-profit prison corporations that are profiting off the pain and separation of immigrant families.

The day of action will be led by the #FamiliesBelongTogether coalition, which has helped lead the fight against the Trump Administration’s cruel immigration policies since organizing the historic national day of action. The coalition is made up of more than 80 organizations representing millions of members nationwide.  Participating organizations in the Columbus, OH action and petition delivery are Hand in Hand, Faith in Public Life, Women’s March Ohio and Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ).

In all 50 states, more than 7,000 people have committed to deliver letters urging the banks to stop financing Geo Group and CoreCivic to local JP Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo branches.

"This week, the faith community is crying out that families belong in communities, not cages. We are deeply aware of the stories throughout our sacred texts of forced migration of asylees, displaced persons, and refugees and God's commandments: to welcome, love, and advocate for the immigrant in our midst,” said Rev. Kate Shaner of First Community Church and a member of Faith in Public Life.  “To profit off people fleeing violence, those hoping to reunite with family, and parents seeking a better future for their children is a moral failure and must end. Here we have an opportunity for redemption and our call is clear: Chase, stop financing prisons that our harm our children."

Approximately 71% of the average daily population in ICE custody are held in privately operated jails. Since ICE was created in 2003, 85 detention centers nationwide have reported a total of 176 deaths. CoreCivic and GEO Group depend on debt financing from banks, including JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo, to conduct their day-to-day business operations, finance new facilities, and acquire smaller companies.

An analysis of U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings over the past ten years shows that Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase has played a leading role in financing these debts. JPMorgan Chase is the single largest financier to GEO Group and CoreCivic, holding 62 percent more debt than the second biggest lender to these two corporations. In doing so, these companies are complicit in and profiting from the mass incarceration and criminalization of immigrants and continuing detainment of immigrant families by the Trump administration.

The millions of Americans represented by the #FamilesBelongTogether coalition, made up of more than 80 organizations, call on Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase to end this complicity and immediately stop their financial support for GEO Group and CoreCivic, private prisons that are profiting from mass incarceration and the criminalization of immigration.
