FL Faith Leaders Applaud SCOTUS Decision on Citizenship Question

Jacksonville, FL -- On Thursday, June 27th, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled against adding a discriminatory citizenship question to the 2020 census.

Florida faith leaders applaud the Justices. This immoral addition to the 2020 census was designed to deter immigrants and communities of color from being counted.

Rev. Joe Parramore, BS, MBA, MDiv., Founding Presbyter/President, New Journey Ministries:

“Today the Supreme Court upheld the constitution and human dignity by striking the Trump administration’s corrupt and racist citizenship question from the 2020 Census. The citizenship question was designed by a Republican operative to exclude immigrant families from the census. But our work isn’t finished. As faith leaders we have a responsibility to fight so that everyone is counted. Every person deserves to be counted -- it’s a matter of dignity and equality.”

Rev. R.L. Gundy, The First Coast Leadership Foundation:

“The census can either be used as a tool to perpetuate white supremacy and exclude entire groups of people from participation as it had in the past, or a tool to promote equity and justice in our communities. Today the Supreme Court decided to uphold the integrity of the census and deny the Trump administration’s attempt to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census. As a pastor, I’m encouraged by this decision and urge Congress to continue to do everything in their power to ensure all of our communities can thrive through equal representation and fair funding.”
