Dr. Shamim Ibrahim is a distinguished leader within Los Angeles’ Islamic community. She is a clear and strong advocate on behalf of women’s rights and social justice within the South Asian immigrant community. She founded Niswa (Arabic for ‘women’) in 1990 to work specifically with the Islamic immigrant community in Los Angeles. It has become a model organization, with over 20 similar groups across the nation formed in recent years to combat domestic abuse in the South Asian community. Ibrahim came to Los Angeles from Pakistan with her husband in 1971, and worked as a Los Angeles Unified School District psychologist. She has been a consistent pioneer in the Islamic community, serving as the first female board member of the Islamic Center of Southern California.
