Progressives and Evangelicals Introduce a New Governing Agenda
Seizing a new moment in Washington, Evangelical leaders and leading progressives -- representatives of two historically adversarial groups -- are offering a new governing agenda to bridge the divide on the nation’s most explosive social issues. On a press conference call, a letter to the incoming administration, and visits with members of Congress and the presidential transition team, these leaders join together to offer the first-ever common values agenda that directly addresses culture war battlegrounds. It includes policies that reduce abortions through increased prevention and support measures, protect the rights of gay and lesbian people in the workplace while respecting religious liberties, reform immigration laws, and end torture. The new common values governing agenda is the product of two years of behind the scenes work by Faith in Public Life, the progressive think tank Third Way, and Evangelical leaders like Joel Hunter and David Gushee.
The “Come Let Us Reason Together” governing agenda represents a landmark moment for Evangelical and progressive engagement in American politics. As an organization advancing faith in public square as a positive and unifying force for justice, compassion and the common good, Faith in Public Life immediately embraced the opportunity to help Third Way build the Come Let Us Reason Together coalition. We're now honored to wholeheartedly endorse the Governing Agenda.
