Some high points from the stem-cell research media coverage

Dan blogged yesterday about the MSM ignoring a diversity of religious views on embryonic stem-cell research, and I’m here to report some good news.

In the last day, there’s been some great coverage of President Obama’s decision to lift the ban put in place by President Bush on funding for embryonic stem-cell research.

Eric Gorski at the AP notes the range of views on the issue, including official mainline Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, and evangelical official positions. He also quotes some common ground-oriented religious leaders: Rev. Sue Thistlethwaite, Rev. Joel Hunter, and Rev. Tom Reese.

Michael Paulson at the Boston Globe also does a good job covering religious and non-religious (he includes the humanists!) perspectives on ESC research. (He also updated his post with a quote from an email I sent him, pointing out the mainline denominations’ positions and support from conservative Republican Sen. Hatch, a Mormon.)

Manya Brachear at the Chicago Tribune poses an open-ended question to her blog readers, but first contextualizes the stem-cell research debate and touches on a variety of religious opinions.

Dan Gilgoff at U.S. News and World Report also notes the stem-cell research supporters from the religious community who were invited to the White House signing.
