Sen. Durbin’s Hearings on DREAM Act: Shining Light on Plight of Talented Young Adults in Legal Limbo
Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) has been a tireless champion for the DREAM Act, which would give undocumented immigrant young adults the chance to pursue their dreams and give back to the U.S. by attending college or joining the military. When the Senate disappointingly stymied the bill’s passage back in December, the faith community wept for the DREAMers’ thwarted dreams and pledged to keep fighting. So too did Congressional champions like Sen. Durbin.
Today, Sen. Durbin announced that he will hold the first-ever hearings on the DREAM Act in the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees and Border Security. It’s a welcome development, especially given the fear-mongering around immigration from Senator McCain this week and the sad news that a popular and much-loved track coach in Arizona was deported today.
The human stakes of this debate are high and hopefully Sen. Durbin’s hearings will call attention to the plight of these talented young adults stuck in legal limbo through no fault of their own.
