Sean Hannity wants Rick Warren to kill President of Iran
Yesterday Thinkprogress posted a video clip of Rick Warren assenting to Sean Hannity’s insistence that we should kill the president of Iran:
TP’s Matt Duss called Rick’s office to further discuss the matter:
Pastor Warren’s office called back to confirm that Warren was indeed referring to Romans 13. I responded, as I wrote in my post, that Romans 13 addresses the power of civil government to punish criminals, and has nothing to do with killing foreign leaders. Warren’s representative said she’d check on that and get back to me again.
Matt is correct. Further, I wish Rick had pushed back against Hannity’s absurd implication that America can kill because King David did so. The belief that our government is Good and empowered by God to smite Evildoers ignores the speck in our own eye, embraces the self-serving and baseless assumption that America and ancient Israel’s roles in the world are comparable, and shares blame for the Iraq war. One of the things I admire about Rick is his ability to re-examine his beliefs on the issues. He did so regarding HIV/AIDS and has done immeasurable good fighting the disease. Hopefully he’ll do the same regarding issues of war and peace.
this makes me exceedingly sad…leaders like warren need to push back so as not to legitimate these sorts of dangerous views.
What they are talking about are Divine Intitution number four.
Exterior Protection.
The Bible has much to say concerning the role of the military. (num.31 :3-5; 32; Josh. 5:13 6:3; Judg. 3:2, 7; Neh. 4:14; Psa. 18:34 Matt. 24:6; Rev. 19:11)
