Rick Perry Prayer Rally Organizers Confirm Their Political Intentions

August 24, 2011, 11:25 am | Posted by Nick Sementelli

While the “coincidental” timing of Rick Perry’s prayer rally earlier this month within a week of the announcement of his presidential candidacy already cast doubt on the “nonpolitical” nature of the gathering, the subsequent actions of the extreme Religious Right group that sponsored the event further demonstrate the rally’s political purposes.

As Jose at Texas Freedom Network points out, five days after Perry’s announcement, the American Family Association–the radical right wing group that organized ‘The Response’–sent an e-mail to those who had registered for the prayer rally directing them to their allies at ‘Champion The Vote.’ CTV is an initiative of fellow Religious Right group ‘United in Purpose’ that is focused on registering to vote Christians who want to “see our nation return to the timeless truth of a Biblical worldview.”

AFA may not have explicitly endorsed Perry’s candidacy, but their electoral ambitions for the email list they built off of the Texas Governor’s prayer rally should put to rest any notion that they are not political actors.
