Religious Freedom and American Values
After last summer’s controversy over a proposed Islamic community center in Manhattan, New York faith leaders wanted to set a different tone moving forward–especially as the tenth anniversary of September 11th approaches. In anticipation of the upcoming anniversary, New York-based religious organizations have formed Prepare New York, an interfaith coalition aiming to promote civil dialogue, religious pluralism, and support for the American Muslim community.
As part of Prepare New York’s official launch last week, the group released a short video on America’s history with religious minorities and immigrant groups. The seven-minute film, “We the People,” makes the case that religious tolerance, diversity, and freedom are integral to our Constitution’s goal to “form a more perfect union.” They hope the video will spark discussion over our nation’s values and our shared goal to build a just society. Watch it below:
Blending America’s history with the potential for America’s future is a compelling way to tell this story. Prepare New York’s thoughtful and positive response to the upcoming 9/11 anniversary is a valuable addition to the national conversation.
