The One Campaign just launched “On the Record”, an online resource that compares presidential candidates’ positions on global poverty and health issues. The interactive website allows you to view a taped video response by each candidate, and compare their policy proposals to The One Campaign’s positions.

One Response to “On the Record About Poverty”

  1. HNC says:

Will the religious organizations in America stand up and speak out for the lest among us?

    Our forgotten American Citizens

“Whatever you do unto the lest of these, you do unto me”. – Quote from the Bible

My question for the presidential candidates is:

As president of the USA, what would you do to drastically increase the senior citizens Social Security income so they can live in dignity and to bring the elderly, veterans and children out of a terrifying life of poverty?

All the candidates needs to step back and look at what our USA elected officials are doing to our elderly, children and veterans that live in poverty.

“Poverty is the worst form of violence.” – Mohandas Gandhi

The Senior Citizens are not leaving our grandchildren IOU’s. This kind of mentality is driving a wedge between the generations. Guess it was inevitable…One sure thing – the Bible teaches that “children will rise up against their parents and parents will rise up against their children”. The sad thing about this wedge is that it’s all lies and propaganda, generated by our elected officials.

The truth is our elected officials choose to rape the Social Security fund in order to – tear down, blowup and then rebuild foreign countries (all with the blood of our children, our husbands, our fathers). Our elected officials choose to fund other countries with the Social Security fund. Our elected officials choose to use the Social Security fund to fund the illegal immigrates – slave labor for the rich. Our elected officials choose to use the Social Security fund to OPEN our borders, thus allowing terrorist a free pass into our country. The illegals walk across our borders every day and bring their children to sit in our classrooms and obtain a free education. Our elected officials are well aware of this, they invite it, they welcome it. Our elected officials raid the Social Security fund to ensure that the criminals have a bed to sleep in, food to eat, clothes to wear, all the medical care they need — all of this is a constitutional right for the criminals. Millions of our legal seniors and children don’t have a constitutional right to shelter, food, clothing or medical care. Millions of our legal seniors and children live a terrifying life of poverty.

What could you afford if your income was only $400 to $1100 per month?

Our elected officials pit the younger generation against their grandparents and parents with lies.

Our elected officials are the one’s that are handing IOU’s to our children, just like they handed the IOU’s to our parents and grandparents.

I ask you — what kind of nation would allow the elected officials to boldly raid and take from their Senior Citizens?

It seems that our elected officials have forgotten our veteran, our soldiers, our elderly and children that live in poverty.

We need all that will to stand up and be a loud voice for our forgotten Americans.

How about sit aside (in the Social Security fund) at least one million dollars for each of our seniors to receive the interest on that fund. That would be ( at 3% interest) $30,000 per year for each senior. We could live on that and the one million principle for each senior would still be there for the next generation of seniors. That would be a fraction of what our government sends to foreign nations (BILLIONS) each year.

In reply to an e-mail received from one of the candidates for president:

Please stop telling the American people that you will do things that you know that you can’t or won’t do.

(Example: one candidate stated that he/she would take the health insurance from their own cabinet members and from all that worked in his/her administration, if they did not accomplish the task (within 6 months) of making sure all the American people had health insurance. I’m not sure the president of the USA has that authority???? Do they?? I don’t believe the American citizens are stupid. I do believe that the American citizens have had enough of deceitful officials running our nation.

Many of our Senior Citizens have a college degree, but we’re unable to work or the companies won’t hire us because of our age (they deny that, of course). The children are not of age to work. Some of our Senior citizens were single parents and had to work and raise their children alone. A one parent family usually don’t have extra funds to save. These are the Senior Citizens and children I’m talking about. These are the Senior Citizens that are now having to live in poverty because their Social Security is between $400 and $1100 per month. We can’t live on that. The Social Security should be increased to a minimum of $2400 per month and max out at $3000 per month. I do not believe, as you stated, it would take 30 years (as one presidential candidate stated – it would take 30 years to get the American people out of poverty) to get our elderly out of poverty, when it only takes a stroke of a pen to send funds to foreign nations for their people – however their people don’t get it, their dictators get it. Why is the USA government doing this? It sounds like blackmail or is the USA paying for their friendship. Their friendship will last about as long as Iraq’s friendship lasted..Remember the 8 year war between Iraq and Iran? The USA funded and trained the Iraqi’s in that war, then a few years later the USA had to fight them in Kuwait (the Iraqi’s used the training and the military equipment they got from the USA during their 8 year war with Iran). Now we’re fighting them again. Just one example. Like I said, with a stroke of a pen the USA can fund other nations, but the USA can’t – WON’T – take care of the American elderly and children in poverty. Who are our elected officials working for – The American citizen or the dictators of foreign nations?

The cap, for Social Security withholding, on wages should be lifted completed on all wages..to include ALL wages.. How can an individual making less than $20,000 per year afford to pay Social Security, when the individuals making over $100,000 can’t afford it. Why are the politicians trying to exempt the higher income of so-called middle class and wealthy. It seems to me that the higher income can afford it more than the lower income.

Please read the other suggestions (at the end).

Some of the candidates speak of their experience. They all have held elected positions and vowed to represent the American citizens.

My question to all of them is: What have you accomplished for the American citizens?

    The way I see it

    1. There are more poor American citizens now than there were yesterday.

    2. There are more of our elderly, children and veterans living in poverty than there were yesterday.

    3. There are more American citizens in need of health care than there were yesterday.

    4. There are more of our soldiers dead today, in foreign countries, than there were yesterday.

    5. There are more uneducated students today than there were yesterday.

    6. There are more over crowded prisons today than there were yesterday.

    7. There are more people losing their livelihood (jobs) today than there were yesterday.

    8. There are more illegals in our nation today than there ware yesterday.

    9. There are more drugs (could be know as WMD / their use destroys human life) and terrorist crossing our borders today than there were yesterday.

    10. There are more of our taxes funding foreign nations today than there were yesterday.

    11. There are more millionaires (the politician’s friends) today than there were yesterday.

In my opinion, the list above is some of what their experience has helped them to accomplish for the American Citizens. How much more will our elected officials take from the American people. How much more do you need to give to your wealthy friends and foreign countries. Billions of our taxes are given to foreign nations while our elderly, veterans and children live in poverty.

Some say other countries have committed genocide. What would you call a slow, degrading death of millions of our seniors, veterans and children that live in poverty?

“A nation that won’t take care of their “legal” elderly, veterans and children, is not much of a nation.”

Our elderly are the forgotten Americans. (Our parents and grandparents)

We’re to old and frail to march the streets of Washington and our voices are now too weak for the politicians to hear.

Will you stand up and help the seniors, veterans and children that live in poverty? Will you help get our senior’s SS checks increased to the point that they can live in dignity and not have to choose between food, shelter, medicine and clothing? Seniors can’t live on $400 – $1100 per month. All the seniors and children need free health care and medicine, like the veterans . We can’t live on promises with NO results.

When will the politicians / candidates turn their attention to the AMERICAN CITIZENS and our needs. All we hear is Iraq, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and any foreign country. We need leaders that will work for the American citizen, not fund the foreign countries with our taxes and our sons/daughters blood.

How does a Nation justify free and total care, (food, housing, utilities, medical, clothing, everything that’s needed) (and a Constitutional right at that) to criminals, but allow their elderly and children to suffer and die in poverty. What kind of nation would do this? Our USA is doing this.

If you REALLY care about our seniors, veterans and children that live in poverty, then PLEASE STAND UP and speak out LOUDLY about it. PLEASE get out there and fight for the ones that can’t fight for themselves. PLEASE condemn the 2.3% raise in Social Security for 2008 and demand that our Social Security be increased to a level that will provide a life of dignity. Let them know that our seniors can’t survive on this.

You never know, maybe 30 to 40 million seniors would cast their vote for someone that has the backbone to take a stand for them.

Our elected officials don’t seem to be aware of (or don’t care) the conditions that millions of our seniors have to live in.

I pray and hope that all will read this and will think about the large percentage of our Senior citizens that live a terrifying and degrading life of poverty. I also hope all of you will give your parents and grandparents a big hug and let them know you love them.

Many of our seniors and children in America live in poverty and I’ve never heard any of our politicians or candidates speak out or stand up for our seniors. It’s like we don’t exist. We’re the forgotten ones.

Health care and medicine should be totally free to our seniors and children without the degrading stigma of welfare/state Medicaid and food stamps. Our social security checks should be at least twice as much as it is now or at least $2400 per month. How do we live on a 2.3% increase; the lowest in 4 years.

My social security check is small and I, like millions of seniors, have to choose between food, medicine, shelter and clothes.

What could you afford if your income was only $400 to $800 per month (after deducting Medicare premiums that’s automatically deducted from our social security checks? Not to mention that Medicare only covers one physical in a lifetime (and that has to be completed within the first 6 months) and a few days in a hospital (Medicare doesn’t pay for much). Medicaid, food stamps and welfare are degrading. (Don’t believe me, try going to a gro. store and paying for your gro. with food stamps or go to the doc. office and tell them you’re on Medicaid. Believe me you will feel the silent degrading, not to mention that some don’t take medicaid people). We should not have to live our life without dignity.

I’m sure that you and I pray that you will never know the terror and degrading feelings that millions of seniors and children must live every day.

I don’t understand a nation that allows millions of their seniors and children to live and die in poverty.

Our leaders should be ashamed that they have allowed millions of our seniors and children in America to have to live in what seems to them a 3rd world country. We know what it’s like to live in this kind of terror, we live it every day. Our leaders have failed us and I don’t think they care. They vote themselves pay raises…to include full funded health care at the tax payers expense, without any thought of the poorest among us (they don’t even think about us, they don’t care if we die) and they call it democracy, I don’t think so. If they can’t live on less than $12,000 per year, neither can we.”American poverty is as real to these as African poverty is as real to the African impoverished ones.” We don’t have to go to Africa to find poverty; it’s all around you, in America.

Suggestions on ways that our government could

pay for lifting our seniors and children out of the pits of poverty and death:

    1. Stop rebuilding/supporting other countries. Our government needs to take care of our own people, our citizens. Our government is building /feeding / housing / securing foreign countries and their people while a large percentage of the USA citizens in America live in poverty. Our seniors and children are suffering while our taxes are being used to build foreign countries. Countries that usually turn against us. Billions of our taxes are given to foreign nations each year.

    2. Add a 1% to 5% Fed. sales tax on all sales (this would probably pay for all the increase and everyone would be contributing).

    3. Take the cap completely of the amount of income that Social Security is withheld on. Social Security should be collected on ALL income, wages, capital gains, business income, ALL income.

    4. Stop allowing deductions to all charities that are not given to the USA citizens (we should feed and care for our citizens before we funnel it to foreign countries).

    5. Stop giving free health care, welfare, and etc. to illegals. The illegals are criminals; they broke our laws by entering our country illegally. They should be deported. Enforce our laws; support our border patrol; get our soldiers out of Iraq and Korea, put them on our, USA, borders.

Illegal immigrants = slave labor and slave labor is illegal…..Isn’t it? Or has that law changed?

    6. Criminals should have to pay for their stay in jail, to include medical care, shelter, food, etc. Or they should be drafted into the military and placed on the front lines; if they want to fight, then let them fight for a good cause. (The cost of housing a criminal per year is about $35,000 +) (Seniors and children are not criminals but our government believes we can survive on much less). When will our American leaders wake up and value their seniors and children more than they value a criminal. We haven’t committed any crimes, yet we must choose between food, medicine, shelter and clothes. The seniors and the children can’t fight for themselves. Criminals in jail don’t have to choose between food, medicine, shelter and clothes; they have a constitutional right to all this, free to them at the taxpayers expense. Our government is sending a message to the criminal that crime pays. I know they don’t have their freedom, but the seniors don’t either, because we can’t afford it.

Aren’t the seniors and children more valuable to our country than the criminals?

    7. Stop giving free money to farmers that make over $50,000 per year (if the elderly are expected to live on less than $12,000 per year, then so can the farmers).

    8. Increase the tax on alcohol by about 200% or more — get the DUI’s of the highways. It might save lives. The government increased the tax on cig., why not alcohol? Smoking and driving don’t kill people and it’s not a crime, but drinking alcohol and driving kills and it’s a crime. Seems like the taxes are on the wrong product.

    9. Close the tax loopholes that benefit the rich at the expense of the poor.
