Chuck as always, articulated the truth with precision and grace. I am praying for his recovery. We need his voice.

Neither GLAAD nor the Commentator Accountability Project uses the term "gay-bashing". That's all Chuck Colson's doing.

The actual wording used by GLAAD:

'The GLAAD Commentator Accountability Project (CAP) aims to put critical information about frequent anti-gay interviewees into the hands of newsrooms, editors, hosts and reporters. Journalists or producers who are on deadline often don't have the time to dig into the histories of a commentator. Audiences need to be aware that when they’re not talking to the mainstream media, these voices are comparing LGBT people to Nazi Germany, predicting that equal treatment of LGBT people will lead to the total collapse of society, and even making accusations of satanic influence.

The Commentator Accountability Project is bringing all of these statements to light, while calling attention to the sentiments behind them. We will show that the commentators who are most often asked to opine on issues like marriage equality or non-discrimination protections do not accurately represent the "other side" of those issues. They represent nothing but extreme animus towards the entire LGBT community.'

I think that describes Chuck Colson's vitriol pretty well.

"Gay-bashing" is not a term with a generally accepted precise meaning. I'm presuming Chuck Colson sees it as meaning advocating violence against gays and lesbians, which is how many people would understand that term. By that definition, none of the quotes from him, as outlandish as they are, would be gay-bashing. GLAAD is presumably using the term in a much broader sense. I think it would be better to describe him as an opponent of gay rights. To me, bashing implies physical violence.

I am always shocked by the virulence against our LGBT brothers and sisters. We pay no attention as Christians to any of the OT laws governing our own actions - anyone practiced Jubilee lately? - , but we pounce upon a handful of verses that governed a tribal society and run with them in justification for massive discrimination and scapegoating. It all so wildly misses the point of our core message that in the new light of Jesus' teachings, we honor and revere and love all people. That is radical Christianity, but it seems to me it's THE core message. Mr. Colson like so many others knows that hate "sells" better than love, that divisions that serve an "Elect" play better with those pretending they are the Elect, but those are not the messages of Christianity. It serves an Old Testamentarianism for which Jesus is reduced to a "get out of jail free" card, not the teacher and prophet he was. Religious reductionism never has proved enduring. This version will not either, but it surely does damage along the way.
