Anderson Cooper on Walid Shoebat: Unmasking a Faux-Expert on Islam and Counter-terrorism

This past March Meg Stalcup and Joshua Craze published a groundbreaking report in the Washington Monthly on the little known network of security ‘experts’ who receive government contracts to train law enforcement professionals about Islam and terrorism. The problem, as Stalcup and Craze revealed and others have continued to investigate, is that many of these ‘experts’ have questionable backgrounds, factually inaccurate curricula, ideological motivations and connections to the wider right-wing anti-Islam movement.

Thankfully, this story seems to be finally making its way up the media chain. Anderson Cooper featured a two-part segment on his show this week investigating one of these trainers, Walid Shoebat:

Hopefully CNN’s level of investigative power and reach will make government agencies realize the problematic nature of the counter-terrorism training they’re paying for, and instead partner with credible experts to develop effective, fact-based counter-terrorism programs.

  1. I’ve blogged these reports, with some extra background detail, here and here.

Yes the gov’t should continue to employ those who turn a blind eye to the likes of Major Nidal Malek Hassan of Fort Hood notoriety.

Be real the only reason CNN is after Shoebat is because he is now an evangelical Christian. I know the hatchett job that CNN did reflects no bias.

@Dr. Good, It’s always the “Liberal” media when evangelicals are caught lying to promote their agenda. Evangelicals expect everyone to bow down and follow them even right off the cliff. Since you all love the old testament so much, Leviticus 19:12 “Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.”
